Why Does Christchurch Water Worsen Hair Quality?

Updated: Sep 15

Kia Ora everyone!!

Have you ever washed your hair in Christchurch and noticed it feels dry, dull, or just lifeless afterward? You're not alone! The water in Christchurch is known for being quite hard, meaning it contains a high concentration of minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. While these minerals are beneficial in many ways, they can wreak havoc on your hair.

The Impact of Hard Water on Hair

Hard water is rich in calcium and magnesium, which might sound harmless, but these minerals can build up on your hair over time.

When this happens, it can create a layer on the surface of your strands, making it difficult for moisture and hair care products to penetrate. As a result, you might find your hair becoming dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

Not exactly the luscious locks we're all aiming for, right?

What’s in the Water?

The pH level of Christchurch water ranges from 7.8 to 8.2, which is slightly alkaline.

This can cause the hair cuticle to lift slightly, leading to a rougher texture and more frizz. Additionally, the water's hardness is measured at 45 g/m³, a significant factor that contributes to these issues.

Here's a quick breakdown of how some of the specific components in Christchurch's water can affect your hair:

Calcium (12.0 g/m³):

High levels of calcium can lead to a buildup on the hair, making it feel rough and difficult to manage. This buildup can also weigh down your hair, making it appear dull and lifeless.

Magnesium (1.5 g/m³):

Like calcium, magnesium contributes to the buildup that can make your hair feel stiff and less bouncy.

Sodium (6.1 g/m³) & Chloride (5.0 g/m³):

These salts can contribute to dryness, especially when combined with the other minerals in the water.

So, What Can You Do?

If you're struggling with the effects of hard water on your hair, there are a few steps you can take:

1. Use a Clarifying Shampoo: This can help remove mineral buildup and restore your hair’s natural shine and softness.

2. Install a Water Softener: This is a more permanent solution that can reduce the mineral content in your water, making it gentler on your hair.

3. Deep Conditioning Treatments: Regular deep conditioning can help to counteract the dryness and brittleness caused by hard water.

4. Final Rinse with Filtered Water: If a water softener isn't an option, try doing a final rinse with filtered or distilled water to wash away some of those minerals.

Christchurch might be known for its beautiful scenery, but its water isn't doing your hair any favors. By understanding what's in the water and taking steps to mitigate its effects, you can help keep your hair looking and feeling its best!
